Jackie Sweeney
Hair & Make-up Designer
As a child living through the 80’s, I was influenced by the bright and bold make-up of the post Punk and New Romantic era. My other love was the work of Jim Henson. I still harbour a dream to work on a Muppet Movie…..
After Art School I gained a place at The London College of Fashion in 1992 to study Theatrical Make-up. During my second year I was able to study whilst working in jobs that became influential in my career. One of these was learning about wig making under the tutelage of Alex Rouse and Jan Archibald, founders of The London and New York Wig Company. Working alongside some incredibly skilled artisans, their level of skill and craft inspired the ethos of Wigs Up North, the Manchester based wig company I co founded in 2004. The other influential job allowed me to take my first steps into the world of working backstage when I became part of the wig department in the West End on The Phantom of the Opera. Here I learnt how to work at speed, stay calm and make sure the show went on!
Upon leaving London I worked at Granada Television and as a freelance make-up artist before myself and Liz Armstrong (along with Vicky Holmes a year later), created Wigs Up North. From a small workshop we grew the business into an award winning enterprise with a retail space for specialist make-up provision plus wig making, wig hire and production design services.
In 2015 I retired from the business with the blessing of Vicky and Liz to concentrate on working in television. Since then I have been fortunate to have worked with many incredible artists and teams, across theatre, film and the television as an artist, crowd supervisor, main team supervisor and now as a designer in my own right.

"Being a make-up supervisor or designer is not solely about skills with brushes and make-up. It involves a high level of people skills as you work with cast, production, other crew members and your own team.
It also requires the ability to think logistically, financially forecast and work with a budget. My career to date plus my experience in business has given me these abilities. I pride myself on running a happy team who feel valued, respected and able to contribute. we leave the drama firmly in front of the camera". Jackie |
